Semilla Center for Healing and the Arts

New Co-Directors and Giant Puppets: An Exciting New Chapter for Semilla!

Semilla Center for Healing and the Arts is very excited to announce our new Executive Co-Directors, Sofía Padilla and Heather Hinrichsen. Sofía is a Mexican theater artist, director, puppet designer, teaching artist and puppeteer. Heather is a Spanish-speaking bilingual educator, teaching artist and stained glass artist from Minnesota, who first learned to make mosaics with Semilla over 10 years ago. Both Sofía and Heather live within a few blocks of the Semilla Studio and feel deeply connected to our neighborhood and the beauty it contains. Sofía and Heather are also this year’s Co-Directors of Barebones Puppets’ 30th Annual Halloween Puppet Extravaganza (on the Midtown Greenway October 27, 28, 29 and 31). Semilla Center for Healing and the Arts is excited to have Sofía and Heather at the helm and look forward to the future art they will bring to the neighborhood.

Please join us in welcoming Sofía and Heather!

Collaboration with Barebones Puppets

In the past month, the Semilla Studio and St. Paul’s – San Pablo Lutheran Church have been taken over by puppets! The church sanctuary and Semilla room are the build site for the creation of Barebones Puppets’ Annual Halloween Extravaganza! Semilla Co-Directors, Sofia and Heather, are also co-directing Barebones for this 30th year of the Barebones puppet pageant—an outdoor spectacle consisting of larger-than-life puppetry, stilting, dance, fire, song, and live music. The show will take place nearby on the Midtown Greenway on October 27, 28, 29 and 31.

Don’t miss this wonderful Halloween tradition of community art!

Upcoming Lantern Workshops and Peace Lantern Procession / Posadas

Semilla and St. Paul’s Church will be co-hosting a Peace Lantern Procession and Traditional Mexican Posadas (community pilgrimage) on December 16 from 5:30-7:30pm.

The lantern-lit Peace Procession and Posada will begin at St. Paul’s Church and proceed through the neighborhood, singing traditional songs in Spanish and English and creating a beautiful spectacle of peaceful energy, light and community. After the Peace Procession, we invite you to enjoy traditional food, a piñata, and vibrant convivencia (community togetherness).

There will be two community workshops to make lanterns for the procession. Please join us for one or both:

  • Saturday, Dec. 9 from 11-1pm @ Midtown Global Market
  • Tuesday, Dec. 12 from 6-8pm @ St. Paul’s Church / Iglesia San Pablo
